Aluminium Case Study

Established in 1998 this well known Housing Group emerged to be a renowned leader in social housing through careful alliances and acquisitions.

With more than a thousand members of staff, the group is responsible for over thirty thousand homes across Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Birmingham, Coventry, and the wider West Midlands.

Many of their housing blocks that were built in the 1960s and still had the original wooden doors. Despite regular repair and maintenance these doors were way past their life expectancy, and had long since failed to adequately secure the properties.

In times of increasing anti-social behaviour, our customer was concerned that resident’s safety was being placed at risk as the doors were no longer fit for purpose. A new solution was required that would enable residents to feel secure in their homes, while providing a modern and updated look for the building.

The existing door, painted in the signature blue of the housing association, was narrow and mainly comprised of solid panels that did little for the appearance of the entrance. The door was hung to the right and opened untidily onto the grass at the side of the property. The overall effect was unwelcoming.

Whilst the ultimate focus was security, style and appearance were not to be compromised, so with this in mind, the UKSD design team opted for aluminium profiles. Manufactured to STS202 BR2 standards, our aluminium guarantees strength and durability, whilst ensuring total weather protection.

UKSD prides itself on designing an antidote to the drab, institutionalised doors of the past and for this project opted to lighten the entrance considerably by replacing solid panels with glazing and widening the door entrance, which bought the door in line with DDA regulations. Furthermore, by placing the Housing Associations signature blue colour against a visually perfect white frame, the door conforms to DDA regulations for the visually impaired.

UKSD achieved not only the security specifications, which were at the heart of this project, but also enhanced the property by fitting a modern, aesthetically pleasing door. By locating the door in a central position within the frame, the team presented an aspect that makes a welcoming entrance for residents and visitors.

"It’s so fresh looking and I love the blue colour – makes me look forward to coming home”

"I feel more able to invite friends over now. The new door looks great.."
